IDEAS
Just Ideas
DeRonna Riddick, PW from Hamilton, OH
sent this GREAT suggestion for the CHILDREN of missionary
families.   My class sent the child a
"birthday box".   We sent everything needed for a birthday party:
decorations, party favors, table cloth & napkins, candles, box of cake
mix, can of icing, sprinkles, packets of kool aid, candy, games, and a
birthday present.   You get the idea.   He invited the neighborhood
children in for the party and his mom took pictures and sent them to our
class.   This started a pen pal event and the children felt like they
knew him although they had never met.   He was also able to get some of the
children there to start attending Sunday School after attending the
birthday party!
Barbara Beam asked for a small, inexpensive gift
suitable for giving while visiting in nursing homes.   I suggested using
parchment paper in your computer and with a nice font, print out some verses.
You can purchase picture mats in various colors at office supplies or Walmart.
Glue the verse to the mat and attach a hangar made from a pop can tab, or whatever
you come up with.   Many elderly people have special dietary needs, things for
their nightstand usually get shoved out of the way or put in a drawer, but a nice
picture would be great, and the Word of God gets out to the patient, caregivers,
and any visitors they might have!
Terri Shuerger, missionary to Mexico, suggests that
part of the love offering be given in cash for the incidentals in traveling.   (Food, gas, etc.)
NOTE: My husband's preference is to give the missionaries a love offering, and also encourage
people to shake their hand and slip them some money.   This blesses both
the "receiver" and the "giver"!   Teaching your people that they can never
out give God, will increase their faith and bless your church.
Deborah Little from Prestonwood Baptist Church in Spring, TX has a great idea.
Give each of the missionary wives at your Mission's Conference a Walmart gift card.
You can add money to the account throughout the year, allowing them to shop at any Walmart nationwide!
Jennifer from Kentucky sent this suggestion:
This is a great idea to try, the ladies at our church have received great blessings by doing this. When we are going to have a missionary visit our church, the ladies all bring in special things for the missionary wives such as bath and shower gels, scented candles, ect. These are things that the missionary wives very seldom can afford to buy for themselves. We arrange them nicely in a basket and give it to them as a token of appreciation for all that they do that goes unnoticed.
Brenda from Indiana sent this suggestion:
She purchased a "Friendship Ball" for $10.00 at a gift shop. This ball is hinged and opens to allow you to insert a little gift. This is to be given to a lady in the church you may have admired from afar with a little note telling them that you appreciate them and to pass the "Friendship Ball" on to someone that they may have been admiring. This is to be kept circulating around the church.
You can also get a little bear and put it in a gift bag with the
inclosed poem: P.A.L. Bear I know no owner, my journey never ends,
I travel in the circle of family and dear friends.
I carry love from place to place for everyone to share,
And when you find me you will know someone remembers you in prayer.
So, please pass along the love I bring to all those for whom you care,
And God bless you 'til we meet again!

Chris from Michigan asked for a way to serve punch that would not require someone to be there serving at a function such as a wedding reception, etc. I suggest something I have used numerous times at banquets and events. I rent a punch fountain from a rental place. These are very elegant looking and are very reasonably priced at under $40.00. They are very impressive looking and add a really nice touch at any special event and best of all are self serve. The larger ones hold 5 to 7 gallons. You can float ice cubes made out of the punch in the bottom basin.
More Mother/Daughter Banquet Ideas
Denise from N.C. asked for a gingerbread house idea for "Sweets for the Sweet" Banquet. I would
try and get large pieces of cardboard, such as refrigerator boxes and use some type of a light weight wood to make a frame to staple it to. You could embellish it with real candy (expensive way) or you could use different mediums to make the "sweets". I suggest scrap materials in bright colors
to try and imitate some of the candies, i.e. gumdrops, red striped material
for the star mint candies, etc. Use glitter to add effect. You can buy
this in a spray now. You could use either paper or batting to stuff the
candies. Add a chimney on top with batting coming out for the smoke
(sprayed cotton candy pink) going up to the ceiling using invisible
fishing wire or thread from the fabric store. Be sure to add windows with
little curtains tied back for effect. Dowel rods with "lollipops" on them
made from circles cut from Styrofoam wrapped with plastic wrap for the
wrapper could line the walkway. Does anyone in your church have the
Christmas yard decoration candy canes? You could incorporate them. This
would be a great thing to build in the doorway, so they would walk through
to come into the banquet. I would also suggest that you put a bench
outside so that you could have a lady there to take pictures of the ladies
with their families with the house as the back drop.
Mission Cupboard Ideas
Here are a few suggestions for stocking your mission cupboard:
Over the counter medicines, vitamins, hair care products, hair barrettes and
pony tail holders, breath mints, gum, thank you notes, stationary, stamps, note cards,
pens and pencils, car toy games, coloring books and crayons, construction and notebook paper, motor oil,
windshield wiper fluid, antifreeze, cans of fix-a-flat, batteries, flashlights, extension cords, jumper cables,
pantyhose, socks, Sunday School lessons and flannel graph, hand sanitizer, and hand lotion.
I hope this helps you stock your missions closet to be a blessing to those missionaries visiting your church.
We have a box in the foyer and put a new suggestion each month in our bulletin for items to bring for the missions closet.
If you have any suggestions to add, please email me. Jayna Davis (my sister), sends this suggestion: Phone and gas cards. Note: watch for expiration dates.
Comments welcome, send me an email.
